HMGB3 (High Mobility Group-Box 3) belongs to the high mobility group box (HMG-box) subfamily. It has 99% homology with HMGB1 and HMGB2. This subfamily has a HMG-box, so it can regulate gene transcription by participating with formation of enhancesomes. The HMG-box subfamily also plays an important role in DNA replication, transcription, recombination and repair,�etc. HMGB3 has been reported to have high expression in embryos and weak expression in adult tissues. HMGB3 is important in keeping the balance between self-renewal and differentiation status in mouse hematopoietic stem cells.
